Campus Climate:

As of 2012 the campus is very trans friendly. The LGBT club has become much more inclusive in recent years and many sponsored events are trans related. The trans Jewish band Schmekel (http://transjews.com/), for example, has performed on campus several years in a row. As a trans student I have found all of my professors thus far to be very accommodating--all have used my correct name and pronouns upon my email request. The administration was also very helpful in facilitating my name change in the university's system following my legal name change.

Facilities:

Every new building under construction is required to include one gender-neutral bathroom. Monroe Hall has one located on the third floor.

As a trans male student who is not completely passable, I have not run into any problems when using any of the men's restrooms.

Safety and Security:

In May 2011 a transgender woman was attacked outside a 7-11 near the Fredericksburg campus. This incident had nothing to do with the University, however: http://www.myfoxdc.com/dpp/news/virginia/transgender-woman-attacked-outs...

The campus police force is very supportive and understanding of LGBT issues. One campus police officer held a free R.A.D. (Rape Aggression Defense) class for biologically female transgender students in Fall 2011. She was very accommodating and told us to come to her if we ever recieved trouble from anyone.

Healthcare

Campus Health Services:

As of Fall 2011 C.A.P.S. (Counseling and Psychological Services) provides a gender identity support group. Their practicing psychotherapists are sensitive and understanding of trans and all LGBT issues.

The option "transgender" is available to check on C.A.P.S. health forms.

Local Health Care Providers:

Whitman-Walker Clinic in nearby Washington, D.C. is a great resource for general LGBT health, including hormone therapy: http://www.whitman-walker.org/

Records and Identity Documents

Registrar's Office:

A student must have a legal name change in order to change their name in the University's system.

Course Management System:

UMW uses Canvas as their course management system. A student can manually change their display name using the "edit profile" option on their profile page. A name change with the University is not necessary.

Student ID Card:

A student must have their name legally changed in order to have their name changed on their student ID card.

School Email:

A student's email address can only be changed once they have had their name legally changed and the University has updated the student's name in their system.

Except for the Canvas course management system, in which a student's display name can be changed manually, only the student's legal name will be displayed on UMW's official websites.
