Housing Policy:

Students that identify as Transgender across any stage of transition can contact our Residential Life LGBT liaison Holly Barker-Flynn. Housing options range depending on comfort of the student.
Students can have medical singles, room with members of the same gender as they identify with or participate in Gender Inclusive Housing options. hbarker@albany.edu

Gender-Neutral Housing Options:

Gender Inclusive Housing is available for all returning students. Students who would like to participate in the binary gendered housing system may do so as they are legally able to, or are comfortable to. First Year students should contact the Holly Barker-Flynn for help navigating the housing system to best fit their needs. hbarker@albany.edu

Facilities:

There are gender inclusive restrooms in the dorms, most dorms have private bathrooms in the suites, with gender inclusive bathrooms in the common areas. There is a list at: http://www.albany.edu/housing/gih.shtml

Some dorms especially Alumni, have gendered bathrooms for entire floors that need a key to be accessed. These bathroom have multiple stall doors and multiple showers with curtains on them.

Sports:

Currently there is no process.

Courses and Programs of Study:

UAlbany offers a minor in LGBTQ Studies, through the Womens Studies Department. It has a variety of courses. Also the Sociology Department offers standard courses that cover trans topics such as Sociology of Gender.

Fraternities and Sororities:

Gamma Rho Lambda is a National Sorority, Our campus chapter is open, inclusive and welcoming to those who identify as women and want to pledge. Also a few of our service fraternities have had trans-male members.

Safety and Security:

The University Police Department has participated in training on LGBT topics, they have just recently adopted a Trans inclusive policy.

Hate crimes and Bias related incidences can be reported in a number of ways i.e. anonymously via the website, or by emailing or calling UPD directly.

Healthcare

Campus Health Services:

Our campus Health center has been trained and strives for Transgender identity inclusion. Students are called by their last name only when called from the waiting room, avoiding pronoun use. Currently there are no transition related services available.

Local Health Care Providers:

The local Community Pride Center, has a transgender service advocate who helps transgender people on the area navigate services. Albany Medical Center has a transinclusive Endocrinology department which has been service transgendered people in the area for years. There are also a variety of other inclusive health services in the area.

Health Insurance:

University Health Insurance covers prescriptions for students, however does not cover any other sexual reassignment costs.

Records and Identity Documents

Registrar's Office:

The Registrars office will process legal name changes with documentation from the court. Any gender markers on campus can be changed once gender markers on other legal documents have been changed such as a drivers license.

Students can register a preferred name through their MyUAlbany account, this is the name that will be used to make their email address and that will show up when sending mail.

Trainings and Workshops:

Safe Space Training covers Trans Allyship as well as general definitions.
Safe Space 2 features an in-depth look to the social constructs of sex, gender and sexuality.

These trainings are not mandatory and are open to faculty, staff and students through out the academic year through the GSRC.
