Housing Policy:

The housing policy is based off of how far along in your transition you are. If you are on hormones and have had some sort of gender reaffirming surgery, you may room with the gender you identify with. There are singles available for transgender students that include their own private bathrooms in some situations and there are also other singles without bathrooms that one may wish to live in. Resident Life on campus is really good about working with transgender students and all students to find the best fit for them.

Gender-Neutral Housing Options:

As of right now there are no gender-neutral housing options on campus unless you choose to live in the College Apartments. The college apartments are open to people who meet one or more of the following requirements:
-Married
-Have children
-21 years of age or older before the start of the semester
-Have lived on campus for a minimum of 4 semesters
-Have completed 60 or more credits
-Are a returning student who has met the on-campus housing policy

Also, in order to qualify you must be registered in 9 or more credits and have a GPA of 2.5 or greater (which you must maintain while living in the apartments.)
An exception to the criteria above may be granted on the basis of documented medical, physical, or psychological needs.

The apartments come in options of one bedroom, two bedroom, and three bedroom. They're about a five minute walk from main campus.

Facilities:

There are several unisex bathrooms around campus. The bathrooms in Senators and Governors dorms are gender by floor. The bathrooms in Arthurs Hall are gender by suite. In Martinetti, the second floor has a co-ed bathroom and the third floor has two separate bathrooms by gender.

Student/Staff Groups:

Johnson State College has a renewed Gay Straight Alliance this year (Fall 2012) called "CHOSEN*" which stands for Catering to Humans with Orientations Separate from Everyday Norms*" The * at the end incorporates Gender Identity into the club as some members felt it was excluded. The club is being based off the constitution of the latter club, LAMBDA, which is no longer in existence.

CHOSEN* plans on using the * as a separate support group that will meet as deemed necessary by members of the club who wish to participate in it. This unofficial* group will meet as a support group at first, but may wish to become an advocacy group on campus working towards expanding the rights of transgender students as well as looking at different housing options for students who identify as transgender.

*Unofficial as not an official club registered with the student senate.

There's a Safe Space training offered to Staff every year on campus. It is said to take place this November and CHOSEN* is going to work with the college to try and get it opened up to students as well.
