Campus Climate:

The climate for members of sexual and gender minorities is becoming more and more positive at Georgetown. In August 2008, Georgetown became the first Catholic/Jesuit college in the United States to launch a University-funded LGBTQ Resource Center. The Center has made great strides over the past few years, bringing more trans-inclusive programming and awareness to campus. Georgetown celebrates "Gender Liberation Week" annually, which focuses specifically on trans and gender non-conforming students and issues in some of its panels and events.

Housing Policy:

At this point housing issues are handled on a case-by-case basis.

Gender-Neutral Housing Options:

Georgetown does not currently offer gender-neutral rooming options, though dormitory floors are usually co-ed, and single rooms are available.

Special Interest Housing:

Georgetown's Office of Residence Life offers a number of interesting living and learning communities, but the Justice and Diversity in Action group usually includes the most LGBTQ+ members. (http://reslife.georgetown.edu/llc.html#Justice)

Facilities:

Georgetown has a number of different on-campus housing options, each of which is unique. There are dormitory options available for freshmen and sophomores who want private, in-room bathrooms and showers (Village C West and Village C East), but these rooms generally require having a roommate. Most dormitories have "gender-designated" showers and restrooms available for floor-wide use.

Gender-neutral (single-stall) restrooms are available in some academic buildings, including the Bunn Intercultural Center and Lauinger Library, although gendered multi-stall restrooms are far more common. The locker rooms at the University's fitness center are also gender-segregated.

Safety and Security:

Incidents of aggression or threats towards LGBT people on and around Georgetown's campus served as driving motivators for the creation of the LGBTQ Resource Center. Since the Center's launch, these incidents have died down significantly. Campus police have been trained to deal with trans-specific issues, as have local law enforcement (http://www.gllu.org).

Hate crimes can be reported through an online system that the University has set up for open access. It's available at http://biasreporting.georgetown.edu.

Healthcare

Campus Health Services:

The campus health center is staffed by medical professionals from the Medstar Georgetown University Hospital (on campus), and these individuals have been trained to deal respectfully with members of sexual and gender minorities. Health center forms are not inclusive of multiple gender identities. There are no specifically promoted transition-related services available at the student health center.

The University does offer on-campus counseling and psychiatric services, and the center does have one staff member who is trained in LGBT issues. (http://caps.georgetown.edu/)

Local Health Care Providers:

The District of Columbia is thankfully home to a number of good resources and transition-related care and general healthcare for trans people. Medstar Georgetown University Hospital, which is on campus, generally provides respectful care for trans patients, though they do not have specific programs for transition-related care. Whitman Walker Health, a clinic in Northwest DC, does offer a number of transition-related services (counseling, HRT, etc.) on a sliding payment scale (http://www.whitman-walker.org/).

Registrar's Office:

Name & Gender Change on Campus Records:

• Only a legal name change can change your name
on transcripts, diplomas, employment records, and all
official University and government documents.

• Class rosters and other non-official documentation can
be changed to reflect preferred first name.

Course Management System:

This information is connected to the student's information on file in the Registrar's Office.

Student ID Card:

Name Change on GOCard:

• A legal name change entitles you to a new GOCard
with your new name.

• If you have not yet changed your name, you can obtain
a GOCard that lists your preferred first name, legal first
initial, and your last name.

School Email:

Students' e-mail addresses are composed of their initials plus an assigned number, for example abc1@georgetown.edu. As the University's e-mail is hosted through Google, students have the ability to easily change their "sent by" name attached to outgoing e-mails. Contact the LGBTQ Resource Center for more information about changing your initials in your e-mail address, if necessary.

Employment Records:

Proof of legal name change (court order, etc.) AND a Social Security card with the staff member's new name are required to change this employment information. Names may be changes on "unofficial" employment records (name tags, etc.) without this information, depending on the department.
