Campus Climate:

The general population is supportive on the campus. Transgender students are often asked to speak at events for departments or training sessions.

Housing Policy:

The Office of Residence Life and Housing offers gender-neutral housing. Efforts are directed towards establishing a community where there is an appreciation of diversity and a respect for individual rights. There is a process in place for students to request special accommodations based on medical or psychological needs. The senior director of Health and Counseling works with each request individually to plan a housing accommodation that will best meet the student's specific needs. This may include a single room with a private bath, selected roommates or certain areas on campus. Sophomores, juniors and seniors may also select to live in designated gender neutral suites or apartments with shared bathrooms

Facilities:

Currently, BSU has 28 gender neutral single occupancy restrooms (GN SORs). Additionally, BSU is committed to placing at least one GN SOR in every new and renovated building. Every restroom on campus has stall doors, the showers have curtains or doors depending on the specific location, and locker rooms have curtains as well for their changing stations.

Courses and Programs of Study:

The GLBT Minor is designed to allow students to explore sexuality and sexual diversity by examining the history and present conditions of sexual and gender formation, as well as ideologies of sexuality, from a range of disciplinary perspectives. Specific courses focus on politics, cultures, representations and literature of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons, as well as ways to analyze and address issues of homophobia, heterosexism and other intersecting forms of oppression. http://www.bridgew.edu/WomensStudies/GLBTcourses.cfm

Course Management System:

Beginning Fall 2011, BSU officially implemented a preferred name option in Banner, the student records database. With this initiative, students have the option to use their preferred name on certain university records where legal name is not required. You can change your first name on class rosters and grade lists, could get a new Connect ID card with your preferred first name, if you change it on class rosters and grade lists first, change your university e-mail address to display your preferred first name, and/or change your first name on Blackboard and Moodle.

If you change your preferred first name for the above purposes, that does not change your legal name with BSU, and ALL other records will still show your legal name. Examples of records showing legal names are such things as transcripts, degree audits, Commencement brochures, degree certificates, financial records, W-2 forms, newspaper articles, enrollment data, financial aid documents, and mailing information. To change the name on these records, you must make a legal name change and then inform the university.

Student ID Card:

First, complete the class roster/grade list change in Infobear. Go to the Parking Services and Connect Card Office. If you are a continuing student, bring your old Connect Card. If you are a new student who has not yet been issued a Connect Card, bring a drivers license or passport. Tell the Connect Card Office you have changed your first name through Infobear and want a new ID card showing your new first name. They will look you up and verify the change of first name. They will issue you a new Connect Card reflecting the change in your first name. There is no fee unless you already have a Connect Card but do not turn it in.

To change your display name for your student email:

Log on to Live@edu and click on the Profile menu in the upper right-hand corner
Click the Details sub-menu, and click Edit
Change your first name as desired, and then click Save.

To change how your name is listed in the email Global Address Book (this is not the same as the directory)

Call IT at (508) 531-2555 or email itsupport@bridgew.edu to submit a ticket
State that you would like to have your preferred name displayed in the Global Address Book (it is important to use this language)
The IT ticket will be completed within 24 hours.

Log into Blackboard
On the welcome page under the Tools section, click the Personal Information link
Click the Edit Personal Information link Update your information, then click the Submit button at the bottom of the page.

To change your preferred name in Moodle:

Log into Moodle In the top right of the page your name will appear as a link. Click this.
Click the Edit Profile tab
Update your information, then click the Update Profile button at the bottom of the page.

AWARE-Aware is a student run group that focuses on GLBT issues of Bridgewater State University. Its mission is to promote the welfare of Bisexual Gay, Lesbian and Transgender students, faculty and/ staff and their allies at Bridgewater State University and the community at large. You do not have to GLBT to be part of the group. AWARE is a group for people who are aware of the issues or want to become aware about what is going on in regards to GLBT on campus. AWARE also does community service with other groups outside campus.

Safe Zone Training-The Safe Zone program assists individuals who want to be allies to or simply learn more about the GLBT community. Participants who take the Safe Zone training can become officially recognized allies by pledging to non-judgmentally listen to GLBTA students, faculty, and staff. Upon pledging, allies receive a placard to prominently display in their office space or residence hall room
